Some of my favorite headshot clients from last year were young medical doctors applying for residencies. Recently I had a nice reunion with them as they hired me to do their graduation photos by the dome at the Johns Hopkins medical school. Perhaps I'll see them again in a few years when I finally get those bionic parts installed...
It's not often that I get offered a beer at a headshot shoot, especially not at 10am, but Kittelson and Associates is an exceptionally friendly place. The company is based in Portland and has translated their kind Pacific Northwest vibe to Baltimore. My job was to take some portraits to match the existing style for their offices all over the country.
When a company needs a lot of people photographed, it's often easier for me to go to them versus having a whole team travel to my studio. I'll typically set up in a conference room or free office, and the subjects will pop in for a session whenever they have a free moment in their workday. Sometimes we'll also have a makeup person on-site.
Sydney came in for some updated photos the other day, and after nailing a few traditional headshots, we played around with different moods and lighting styles. I dusted off my snoot and my gels and my beauty dish and we had some fun!
I call the lighting style above "the super hero," because it's the kind of thing you see in movie posters.
Every year I do lots of medical residency photos. This is one of my favorite headshot assignments, mainly because of all the free advice. "Could you turn slightly to the left? Oh, and I've been having this stabbing pain in my right knee..."
In all seriousness, I love chatting with the brilliant and ambitious young doctors who come through from places like Hopkins and the University of Maryland. And helping them match with the residency of their dreams, even in a tiny way, is also very nice.
